T@G Boondocking on Private Land

Finally, the first trip of 2021 has arrived! When the weather is not too hot, we like to try to boondock as much as possible. And since we were coming off of a year of not seeing family, why not go camping at Grandma’s?

The temperatures were mild all weekend, which was wonderful. The only drawback was that the wind was pretty strong for most of our time there. However, that really didn’t limit us any, and we were still able to get the propane fire pit out on Friday night, and actually had a bonfire on Saturday. The entire weekend was very enjoyable, and we did get a chance to catch up with family that we hadn’t seen in quite some time.

Being the first trip of the year, this was also somewhat of a shakedown trip, as we had a couple new items that we were trying out. The main thing we were testing was our newly installed Froli system for the bed. Tammy really likes the difference that it made on her side. For me, it wasn’t bad, but it was making my arms fall asleep at times. I believe it was from the lighter “springs” in the shoulder area. I’m still working on tweaking the setup, and I’ll post updates later.

The other thing that we were testing was our Sportsman dual fuel generator that we purchased early in 2020, but never actually used. Knowing that we had the generator at our disposal, we were using electricity pretty heavily this trip (including running the microwave, and a Keurig coffee maker). Our typical boondocking setup has us running primarily off of our Jackery 1000, and recharging that with the Solar Saga panels. Since we depleted the Jackery so much, we ran the generator for a short period on Saturday afternoon to recharge it some. We just ran it for less than an hour, and it charged it enough to get us through the rest of the weekend.

The first trip of the year turned out great. It’s always nice to have a shakedown trip, and to get home without a huge “to-do” list. And, most of all, it was so nice to spend the weekend visiting family.
